Aikawa was born in the town of Utadzu, Kagawa prefecture. After graduating from the singing course of the Tokyo National University of Music and Fine Arts in 1978, she entered master course and then doctor course of the same university. Following the graduation of the doctor course in 1986, she obtained a doctorate in singing (soprano) in 1987 which is the first ever given in singing in Japan. Besides her regular concert activity, she has been active in the concert of the "Aikawa Yumi sings children's songs club". She also performed in varios occasions such as NHK new comer concert, Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall concert of recommended players, Tokyo summer music festival, Kusatsu International Summer Music Academy & Festival, Music Today and the Exhibition of a Composer series by Suntory Music Foundation. She also appeared on TV and radio broadcasts. She recorded her solo albums as well as recordings of works by Japanese comporsers. In 1984, 85, 88, 86, 96 and 99, Aikawa was invited to the People's republic of China by the Chinese government to perform Japanese compositions. In 1985 and 1991 she went to the USA and sung Japanese music. The performance at the Carnegie Hall to celebrate quarter century anniversary of sister city of Tokyo and New York city in 1985 was especially highly acclaimed by the New York Times. In 1992 she was awarded the Japan Art Festival Prize for her successful concert "Aikawa Yumi recital". |
