This is a story I read when I was a junior high school student. I would like to introduce this story to students in the Peace Project. In this story, a girl sang a lullaby to a boy she didnft even know the name. The girl herself must have had a hard time in the war, but she thought of the boy she met for the first time and sang a lullaby. I thought she had a great mind of kindness. I believe that having a mind of kindness like her will lead us to the world peace.
Title:
A Motherfs Lullaby
A big, old tree stands by a road near the city of Hiroshima. Through the years, it has seen many things.
One summer night the tree heard a lullaby. A mother was singing to her little girl under the tree. They looked happy, and the song sounded sweet. But the tree remembered something sad.
gYes, it was about sixty years ago. I heard a lullaby that night, too.h
On the morning of that day, a big bomb fell on the city of Hiroshima. Many people lost their lives, and many others were injured. They had burns all over their bodies. I was very sad when I saw those people.
It was a very hot day. Some of the people fell down near me. I said to them, gCome and rest in my shade. Youfll be all right soon.h
Night came. Some people were already dead. I heard a weak voice. It was a lullaby. A young girl was singing to a little boy.
gMommy! Mommy!h the boy cried.
gDonft cry,h the girl said. gMommy is here.h Then she began to sing again.
She was very weak, but she tried to be a mother to the poor little boy. She held him in her arms like a real mother.
gMommy,h the boy was still crying.
gBe a good boy,h said the girl. gYoufll be all right.h She held the boy more tightly and began to sing again.
After a while the boy stopped crying and quietly died. But the little mother did not stop singing. It was a sad lullaby. The girlfs voice became weaker and weaker.
Morning came and the sun rose, but the little girl never moved again.Nami Tamaoki (girl) Sapporo Nanryo Senior High School

Title)
The sun is surely a symbol that draws a bright future.
When will we be able to run hand in hand and play under the sun?
When will we be able to see dazzling sun light reflected by green leaves?
I want to rest under a big tree.
I want to lie on the grass and take deep breath under the blue sky.
Everyday we watch the world spinning, frightened.
I hate that kind of life.
I want to play with my friends soon.
It may be hard to live everyday because we donft have enough to eat.
But I believe we can find a way to run again under the blue sky.
The earth is our only treasure and it is so important.
We must take good care of it.
So it is time to stop war.
